How the Program Worked for Susan

Susan N. lost 100 pounds on the LWCC program. She was committed, persistent and focused, and her hard work paid off. See how she did it.

Foundation

Susan began the program because she was frustrated with other diet plans. When she started, she weighed 232 pounds. Every day, she consumed more than 2,000 calories and 50 grams of fat. While it’s recommended that people take 10,000 steps per day, Susan took approximately 4,400 steps per day

Over four weeks, Susan monitored what she ate and filled out a decision-balance sheet, which helped clarify and strengthen her commitment to long-term weight control. She also focused on her relationship with food and learned new cognitive techniques from John.

By the end of this stage, Susan had took 6,800 steps per day—an increase of 35%. She also had decreased her fat intake by 70% and reduced her daily calorie intake by about 45%. At the end of four weeks, Susan had dropped 12 pounds, weighing 220 pounds.

Active Weight Loss

Susan began taking OPTIFAST and strictly followed the guidelines. She consumed 800 calories and 15 fat grams per day. She also increased her step level to 10,750 per day and started going to the gym regularly.

Beyond physical changes, Susan started to work on cognitive and emotional responses to relationships. She decided her health and quality of life would be her number one priority, and she worked toward that goal.

By the end of this stage, Susan weighed 193 pounds—a loss of almost 40 pounds in just over 3 months.

Transition

Susan transitioned back to regular food from OPTIFAST. She was now consuming approximately 1,200 calories and 20 grams of fat per day.

She continued to focus on cognitive and emotional responses to work, relationships and her personal life. She learned to incorporate mindfulness—being aware of her thoughts and emotions—into how she approached food and other parts of her life.

At the end of this stage, Susan weighed 186 pounds and continued to drop weight.

Consolidation

Susan was completely back on regular food and consumed between 1,000–1,200 calories per day, well below where she started. During this time, she was walking about 12,000 steps a day and even began a triathlon training program.

Susan also started investigating a career change. She also prioritized changes in her personal life and took specific steps to meet new people and build new relationships.

At the conclusion of the consolidation stage, she weighed 171 pounds—and, more importantly, she continued to lose weight.

Ongoing Weight Control

Since starting the program, Susan’s life has changed dramatically. After 18 months, she now weighs 135 pounds—a loss of over 100 pounds. More importantly, she’s kept the weight off.

She remains very active and takes between 10,000 and 15,000 steps a day. She goes to the gym 2 to 3 times a week and regularly participates in 5K and 10K walks. She now has a new career and a new romantic relationship in her life.

Here’s what she says abut her experience:

“I didn't realize how much this would change my life. Since losing 100 pounds, I’ve tried things I’d never imagined. I do yoga and Pilates. I’ve even started playing tennis—something I could never have done when I was 100 pounds heavier. Losing weight also brought out my personality. Instead of lingering in the background, now I’m the center of attention (and I love it!). I’m confident and happy and feel better than I ever have.”
